Thursday, July 9: Capulin Springs in the Sandias

Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Sandia Ranger Station in Tijeras on Highway 337. Meet the group here instead of at the springs in case of closures in Sandias due to fire danger. Bring lunch. (Parking fee or pass required in the Sandias.)

Saturday, July 11: Los Alamos Area Specialties

Meet at the Whiterock Fire Station at 8:00 a.m. We will bird in Bandelier, the Pajarito mountain ski area, and areas in the Jemez. Species we hope to see are Three-toed Woodpecker and other mountain species. We will end this trip at the Jemez falls where we will hopefully see Black Swifts that nest there. There will be a fair amount of walking, some at high elevation. Bring plenty of water and appropriate clothing due to variable weather. We will have lunch at the ski area. Thursday, July 16: Three-toed Woodpecker quest in the Sandias

Meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Sandia Ranger Station in Tijeras on Highway 337.
The group will explore the trails near Kiwanis Meadow and possibly go to the Ellis trailhead. Bring lunch or buy lunch at the Crest House. (Parking fee or pass required)
Thursday, July 23: Simms’ Ranch and Bonnie Long’s house in the Manzanos for hummingbirds, bluebirds, and a potluck lunch

Meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Four Hills shopping center north of Hollywood Video or the entrance to the Simms’ Ranch on Highway 337 six miles south of Chilili at 9:50 (west side of the highway). Bonnie will provide chicken enchiladas and iced tea, and everyone else should bring other dishes and drinks.
Thursday, July 30: 10K Trail in the Sandias

CNMAS Field Trip
Saturday-Sunday, August 15-16: Southeastern Plains: Migrants and Specialty Breeders

Meet at the Allsup’s just north of exit 275 in Santa Rosa at 6:00 a.m. After Santa Rosa we’ll bird around Fort Sumner and Clovis, hoping to encounter early migrants along the way. We’ll spend the night in Roswell. Sunday morning we will bird Bitter Lake NWR, one of the state’s best sites for shorebirds. The trip will conclude before noon in Roswell although there will be an optional trip to Brantley Lake for those interested. Eastern breeders we hope to encounter include Least Bittern, Mississippi Kite, Chimney Swift, Red-headed Woodpecker, Blue Jay, and possibly Dickcissel. At Bitter Lake we’ll search for shorebirds, American Bittern, Snowy Plover, and Least Tern. Please contact me if you plan on attending.

Thursday, August 20: Villaneuva State Park on the Pecos River

Meet at 7:00 a.m. in the Four Hills shopping center north of Hollywood Video. Bring lunch. The park is east on I-40 for 70 miles, then north on Highway 3 for 20 miles. There is a $5.00 entrance fee if you don’t have a state parks pass.

Saturday, September 12: Shorebirds in the Belen area

Meet at 7:00 a.m. behind the Hawthorne Suites on Gibson and University to carpool to the Belen Wetlands and the Whitfield Wildlife Conservancy Area in Belen in hopes of seeing shorebirds. There will be a one mile walk at Whitifield. We should be back in Albuquerque by 1:00 p.m.
